Plaster walls take a different approach
Many older homes around Ashland, Catlettsburg and Russell have plaster over wood lath instead of drywall. Plaster cracks if you drill it carelessly, and the anchors in the box won’t hold in it. I tape and pre-drill, find the studs behind the lath, and use hardware made for plaster or masonry.
What to have ready
The TV, the mount, and a rough idea of where you want it. Most people are happiest with the middle of the screen near eye level when seated, about 42 inches off the floor. I’ll mark the spot with painter’s tape so you can see it before anything gets drilled.
Questions
Can you hide the wires inside the wall?
Not inside the wall. Running cable through a wall next to a new or moved outlet is electrical work in Kentucky. A paintable cord cover on the wall hides the wires neatly and can be painted to match.
How big a TV can you mount?
Up to about 85 inches on a mount rated for it, fastened into studs or masonry. For TVs over 65 inches I’ll ask you to help lift it onto the mount.
Can you mount a TV over a fireplace?
Often, yes. I check what’s behind the wall first. Some fireplace walls are hollow framing, some are brick, and each needs different hardware.
