About 1 hour

What’s included

  • Grab bars fastened into studs or with anchors rated for grab bars
  • Stair and porch step handrails, including tightening loose ones
  • Lever door handles that are easier on arthritic hands
  • Non-slip strips in tubs and on steps
  • A second stair railing on the other side

Not included

  • Walk-in tub or shower conversions
  • Wheelchair ramps that need a permit
  • Stair lifts

Why they have to go into studs

A grab bar has to hold a person’s full weight at the moment they slip. Towel-bar anchors pull right out of drywall. I find the studs or use anchors made and rated for grab bars, and I pull hard on every bar before I leave.

Booking for a parent?

You can book for someone else. Put their address and phone number in the booking form, and I’ll call them to confirm before I come.

Questions

Where should grab bars go?

The most useful spots are beside the toilet, on the long wall of the tub or shower, and at the spot where you step in. I’ll watch how the person gets in and out and suggest spots before drilling.

Can you install bars I already bought?

Yes, if they’re real grab bars rated to hold weight. The package will say, usually 250 pounds or more. Suction-cup bars aren’t safe to rely on, so I won’t install those as a support.
